Enshrined in Crumbs: The Inaugural Class of the Desk Snack Hall of Fame

There are monuments to American achievement. Mount Rushmore. The Gateway Arch. That one giant ball of twine in Minnesota. But none of them honor the true national pastime: eating questionable food at your desk while pretending to answer emails.
That ends today. Welcome to the inaugural class of the Desk Snack Hall of Fame, sponsored by nobody, judged by us, and resented by your office manager.
The Rules (There Were Almost No Rules)
To qualify, a snack had to meet three criteria: it must be consumable within arm's reach of a keyboard, it must inspire at least a mild amount of shame, and it must have survived at least one near-miss with the space bar.
Ten inductees made the cut. Several did not survive the vetting process. We'll get to the scandals.
The Class of 2025
1. Cold Day-Old Pizza. The headline inductee. Eaten straight from the box, often standing, always at 9:47 a.m. Its acceptance speech was delivered by the slice itself: "You didn't even heat me. That's love. Or a broken microwave. Either way, I'm honored."
2. The 3 P.M. Vending Machine Gambit. Not one food so much as a lifestyle. This inductee represents every $1.75 bag of chips purchased in a moment of pure professional despair. Its speech was mostly crinkling.
3. The Drawer Granola Bar, Fossilized. Discovered behind a stack of sticky notes, vintage unknown. Scientists say it may predate the pandemic. It ate before speaking, which felt rude.
4. Birthday Cake From the Break Room, Stolen Under Cover of a Meeting. You took two slices. You said it was for a coworker. Nobody followed up. This is the American dream in frosting form.
5. The Yogurt You Forgot Was in the Fridge. A posthumous induction. We observed a moment of silence, then quietly threw the fridge away.
6. Gas Station Taquitos, Consumed at a Red Light, Technically at Your Desk (Your Car Is a Desk). The mobile office counts. We don't make the rules. Actually, we did, and it counts.
7. The Commemorative Office Popcorn Tin, February Edition. Three flavors, all of them "kind of cheesy," all of them eaten during the Super Bowl you were only half-watching on a second monitor.
8. Goldfish Crackers, Consumed by the Handful, No Memory of Purchasing Them. Nobody buys Goldfish. They simply appear, like weather.
9. The Free Lunch Left Over From a Meeting You Weren't Invited To. The boldest inductee. Its acceptance speech was one word: "Entitled." It has never been more correct.
10. A Handful of Trail Mix, Which Is Legally Just Candy With a Résumé. Included for balance. Nobody has ever felt full from trail mix. It remains the most optimistic food in America.
The Scandal Section
No Hall of Fame is complete without controversy, and this year's vetting committee (three Dogboff editors and one intern who has since requested a transfer) disqualified several high-profile candidates.
Disqualified: The Microwave Fish. Any fish reheated in a shared office microwave is banned for life. The smell lingered in our test facility for eleven days. Facilities management has filed a restraining order against the concept of tuna.
Disqualified: The Boiled Egg. Devastating loss. Beloved snack. Catastrophic office odor. The committee wept, then opened a window.
Disqualified: The Onion-Anything. See above. See literally everything above.
Disqualified: The Soup, Slurped at Full Volume During a Zoom Call. The entire selection committee heard it. Everyone on the call heard it. You know who you are.
Your Ballot for Next Year's Class
The people decide. Vote for one of the following eligible candidates for induction in 2026:
- The 11 a.m. "Is it lunch yet?" sandwich
- Desk almonds, consumed aggressively during a tense phone call
- The community candy jar (you contributed one time, in March)
- The protein bar that tastes like drywall but you keep buying anyway
- The mystery Tupperware you were too scared to open
Drop your vote in the comments. Campaign dirty. This is a family blog and we encourage it.
Final Words From the Podium
Desk snacking is not a habit. It's a discipline. It's the quiet act of feeding yourself in a world that schedules meetings at noon. To every cold pizza, every fossilized granola bar, every vending machine bag that opened with the gentle violence of a fireworks display: we see you. We salute you. We will brush the crumbs off the keyboard later. Probably.
The Desk Snack Hall of Fame is a fictional institution that we are emotionally committed to. The crumbs, however, are extremely real.
